Are you thinking about getting nipple reduction surgery? While the nipples and areolas are not often visible, their appearance can have a negative effect on a person’s comfort with their appearance. Nipple reduction surgery and areola reduction surgery provide a way for both women with disproportionately large nipples and areolas to reduce their size and enhance the overall appearance of their breasts. At Shafer Clinic Fifth Avenue, we offer nipple reduction surgery and areola reduction surgery for patients in New York City.

What Is Nipple Reduction and Areola Reduction?

Nipple reduction is a surgical procedure to address long or disproportionately large nipples. In some cases, the size and length of the nipple can cause self-image issues that may make it difficult for a person to feel comfortable with the appearance of their body, especially in more intimate situations. Nipple reduction surgery can be performed on both women and men.

Areola reduction surgery is performed on women and men with disproportionately large areolas, noticeably puffy areolas, or asymmetrical areolas. Large areolas may be the result of a congenital issue, or they can become enlarged due to breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Am I a Good Candidate for Surgery?

If the size of your nipples or areolas is affecting your self-esteem and comfort with your body, you are a good candidate for areola reduction or nipple reduction in New York City. For patients who are interested in nipple reduction or areola reduction, it is best that you wait until you are finished having children or do not plan on having children as pregnancy can affect the results of your procedure.

In many cases, nipple reduction and areola reduction are performed in conjunction with breast enhancement procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction so that the appearance of the nipple and areola compliments the new shape and size of the breast for more natural-looking results. However, some women may find that they are not happy with their final results. In these cases, nipple reduction or areola reduction can be performed as a separate procedure.

If you are interested in nipple reduction surgery, the best way to determine if you are a candidate is to schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Shafer.

What to Expect

Nipple reduction and areola reduction can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The incision for nipple reduction surgery is made along the inside of the nipple. A small wedge of tissue may be removed to help reduce the overall size of the nipple. If the nipple has too much projection, the remaining tissue may be tucked in to decrease the length.

During areola reduction surgery, a portion of the areola is removed by making a donut-like incision. The skin around the areola and the remaining areola tissue are then sutured together. In order to produce natural-looking results, the stitches are made along the natural border of the areola.

Recovering from Nipple Reduction and Areola Reduction

Most patients only need around three days to recover from the procedure. Swelling and bruising are common but should dissipate quickly. Post-operative instructions will be provided.
