There’s a reason why patients should listen to their plastic surgeons. When a surgeon tells a patient a particular surgery isn’t right for them, this shouldn’t be a cue for the patient to perform the treatment by themselves. Unfortunately, one Korean model decided to take matters into her own hands after her doctor refused to perform a cosmetic treatment, and the results were nothing short of disastrous.

Hang Mioku was a beautiful model in her glory days but her career went up in flames after she became addicted to plastic surgery. In fact, she became so fixated on altering herself that when her surgeon told her he would not perform any more treatments, she decided to inject cooking oil into her face. The results? Well, what do you think happens when someone injects cooking oil into their body? Not good.

Mioku had her first plastic surgery when she was 28 years old, which isn’t necessarily unheard of. There are plenty of young women and men who turn to plastic surgery to correct minor imperfections on the face, such as a crooked nose through Rhinoplasty or to smooth out wrinkles with Botox. But while cosmetic treatments can help improve the way a person feels on the outside and within, there comes a point when a person can develop body dysmorphic disorder, which leads them to see imperfections that are not really there. At this point, the individual can become obsessed with plastic surgery and go down an irreversible path, which is exactly what happened to Mioku.

The former model got so many silicone injections on her face that it became enlarged. This is when her surgeons refused to perform anymore treatments. Now 50, Mioku looks completely unrecognizable. Her face has been left badly disfigured and in worse condition than after the initial self-injected oil. She attempted to continue to correct her face and underwent procedures to achieve smoother skin, but there’s just no turning back now.

But Mioku isn’t the first celebrity to go overboard with plastic surgery. Amanda Bynes, Lindsey Lohan and Heidi Montag are just a few of the young Hollywood starlets that were once naturally beautiful and many will argue, are now unrecognizable, and not in a good way.

Here in New York, Dr. David Shafer and our cosmetic surgery team at Shafer Plastic Surgery have seen many young patients try to undergo surgery when they were not in need of it. Dr. Shafer always places the patient’s health above anything else and if he doesn’t think a particular surgery is practical, he will not put the patient’s life in danger by performing it.

It’s important to turn to an experienced and compassionate plastic surgeon when considering any type of cosmetic enhancement who will tell you what you should hear, not what you want to hear. A few corrections will not radically change a person, but when a patient comes back after 4, 5 or even 6 or more surgeries asking for more treatments, any dedicated doctor will refuse to perform the treatment for their own good.

So if you have considered any surgical treatment, turn to NY plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer before making a decision to discuss what your ideal options are so your results can be both beautiful and natural.
