LAP-BAND is a minimally invasive procedure that helps individuals lose weight by limiting the amount of food they can eat to healthier and smaller portions. While LAP-BAND is effective, the results it provides need to be maintained by continuing to adhere to a healthier lifestyle that includes healthy portion control and regular exercise. This is why post LAP-BAND care is important.

At Shafer Clinic Fifth Avenue in New York City, we offer post LAP-BAND information and assistance to ensure patients can maintain their weight loss and to help them on their journey to living healthier lives.

LAP-BAND Overview

The LAP-BAND device is a type of weight-loss tool known as a gastric band. The LAP-BAND System is a thin adjustable band that is wrapped around the upper portion of the stomach to reduce the size of the stomach which limits the amount of food needed for the patient to feel full. The band is inserted laparoscopically with small incisions being made around the abdominal area.

Post-Surgery Diet

During the first one or two weeks following your LAP-BAND procedure, you will need to follow a liquid diet. Patients are not able to tolerate solid foods at this point. Hydration is also incredibly important during the first few weeks.

After around three or four weeks, pureed foods can be introduced to your diet which will help with the eventual transition to solid foods. You must choose foods rich in protein like pureed chicken or fish. Pureed vegetables can be introduced slowly as well.

After five weeks, softer solid foods can be introduced. Tender meats like ground turkey and fish are good options. All foods should be cut into small pieces and should be chewed well. Sometimes patients may experience nausea or vomiting after consuming solid foods. If this occurs, return to a liquid diet for a few days and then try introducing solid foods again.

LAP-BAND Adjustments

Adjustments are a normal part of the LAP-BAND process and help to ensure the best possible results and patient comfort. After undergoing an adjustment, you will need to return to a liquid diet followed by pureed foods to adjust to solid foods again.

Maintaining Weight Loss Post LAP-BAND

Once the LAP-BAND system is removed it is possible to regain the weight. However, this issue can be prevented by maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle post LAP-BAND. Following a healthy and balanced diet is very important. This includes eating a variety of nutritious foods as well as portion control. Regular exercise is also important for maintaining a healthy body and preventing weight gain. Making and adhering to a daily diet and workout schedule can be incredibly useful for staying on track.
